When I select an image size for a frame do you make it a little smaller to hold down the picture?

Answer.

When you select a size (i.e. 8 x 10) for your image(s) size the opening of the mat will be 7-3/4 x 9-3/4 so that the mat board or frame (if you select no mat) will overlap your image by 1/8" all around your picture to prevent it from falling in front of the mats/frame.
